Methylphenidate tablets are a prescription-only immediate-release stimulant used in the treatment of ADHD in adults and children aged 6 and over. Schedule 2 controlled drug. Available only on specialist prescription as part of a supervised ADHD programme at Pharmacy Mentor.

Start Assessment

Methylphenidate tablets contain methylphenidate hydrochloride, a central nervous system stimulant and first-line pharmacological treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children aged 6 and over. The immediate-release formulation provides rapid onset of effect, typically within 30 to 45 minutes, and has a duration of action of approximately three to five hours. Methylphenidate is a Schedule 2 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 and is available only on specialist prescription as part of a comprehensive, clinician-supervised ADHD management programme at Pharmacy Mentor.

How It Works

Methylphenidate works by blocking the reuptake transporters for dopamine and norepinephrine in the presynaptic neuron, increasing the concentration of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft of key brain regions involved in attention, executive function, and impulse control. This neurochemical mechanism helps restore normal function in the prefrontal cortex and other areas implicated in ADHD, improving the ability to focus, organise tasks, and regulate behaviour and impulse. The immediate-release formulation may require multiple doses across the day to provide adequate symptom coverage during morning, afternoon, and early evening activities, as directed by the prescribing clinician.

Why Methylphenidate is a First-Line ADHD Treatment

Methylphenidate is one of the most extensively studied medications in psychiatry, with decades of randomised controlled trial data and real-world evidence supporting its efficacy and safety in both adults and children with ADHD. It is recommended as a first-line pharmacological treatment for ADHD by NICE and is the standard of care across the majority of international clinical guidelines. The immediate-release formulation offers dosing flexibility that is particularly useful during the initial titration phase, when clinicians are establishing the individually effective dose for each patient.

The availability of 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablet strengths enables gradual and carefully supervised dose escalation from a low starting dose. This incremental approach is essential in ADHD management to balance symptom improvement against tolerability, ensuring that the optimal therapeutic dose is established for each patient individually through regular clinical review.

Important Note

Methylphenidate is a Schedule 2 controlled drug and must be prescribed by a clinician with specialist ADHD expertise. It is contraindicated in patients with hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, cardiovascular disease including arrhythmias or structural cardiac conditions, glaucoma, or current or recent use within 14 days of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Common side effects include reduced appetite, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, and increased heart rate or blood pressure. Regular monitoring including cardiovascular parameters, blood pressure, weight, and clinical response is required throughout treatment. This medication must only be used as directed by a qualified specialist prescriber as part of a supervised ADHD management programme.
